Shakir: And when affliction touches a man, he calls on Us, whether lying on his side or sitting or standing; but when We remove hisaffliction from him, he passes on as though he had never calledon Us on account of an affliction that touched him; thus thatwhich they do is made fair-seeming to the extravagant.

Ayah: 24
Pickthal: The similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky, then the earth's growth of that which men andcattle eat mingleth with it till, when the earth hath taken on herornaments and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters ofher, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and We make it as reapedcorn as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do we expound therevelations for people who reflect.
Shakir: The likeness of this world's life is only as water which We send down from the cloud, then the herbage of the earth ofwhich men and cattle eat grows luxuriantly thereby, until whenthe earth puts on its golden raiment and it becomes garnished, and its people think that they have power over it, Our commandcomes to it, by night or by day, so We render it as reaped seed; produce, as though it had not been in existence yesterday; thusdo We make clear the communications for a people who reflect.
Yusuf Ali: The likeness of the life of the present is as the rain which We send down from the skies: by its mingling arises the produce of theearth- which provides food for men and animals: (It grows) till the earthis clad with its golden ornaments and is decked out (in beauty): thepeople to whom it belongs think they have all powers of disposal over it:There reaches it Our command by night or by day, and We make it like aharvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished only the day before! thusdo We explain the Signs in detail for those who reflect.

Pickthal: And those who earn ill-deeds, (for them) requital of each ill-deed by the like thereof; and ignominy overtaketh them - They have noprotector from Allah - as if their faces had been covered with a cloak ofdarkest night. Such are rightful owners of the Fire; they will abidetherein.
Shakir: And (as for) those who have earned evil, the punishment of an evil is the like of it, and abasement shall come upon them-- they shall have none to protect them from Allah-- as if theirfaces had been covered with slices of the dense darkness of night;these are the inmates of the fire; in it they shall abide.
