Ayah: 13
Pickthal: That is because they opposed Allah and His messenger. Whoso opposeth Allah and His messenger, (for him) lo! Allah is severe inpunishment.
Shakir: This is because they acted adversely to Allah and His Messenger; and whoever acts adversely to Allah and His Messenger-- then surely Allah is severe in requiting (evil).
Yusuf Ali: This because they contended against Allah and His Messenger: If any contend against Allah and His Messenger, Allah is strict in punishment.

Pickthal: Whoso on that day turneth his back to them, unless manoeuvring for battle or intent to join a company, he truly hath incurred wrath fromAllah, and his habitation will be hell, a hapless journey's end.
Shakir: And whoever shall turn his back to them on that day-- unless he turn aside for the sake of fighting or withdraws to acompany-- then he, indeed, becomes deserving of Allah's wrath, and his abode is hell; and an evil destination shall it be.

Shakir: So you did not slay them, but it was Allah Who slew them, and you did not smite when you smote (the enemy), but itwas Allah Who smote, and that He might confer upon thebelievers a good gift from Himself; surely Allah is Hearing,Knowing.
Yusuf Ali: It is not ye who slew them; it was Allah: when thou threwest (a handful of dust), it was not thy act, but Allah's: in order that He mighttest the Believers by a gracious trial from Himself: for Allah is He Whoheareth and knoweth (all things).

Shakir: If you demanded a judgment, the judgment has then indeed come to you; and if you desist, it will be better for you;and if you turn back (to fight), We (too) shall turn back, andyour forces shall avail you nothing, though they may be many, and (know) that Allah is with the believers.
Yusuf Ali: (O Unbelievers!) if ye prayed for victory and judgment, now hath the judgment come to you: if ye desist (from wrong), it will be bestfor you: if ye return (to the attack), so shall We. Not the least good willyour forces be to you even if they were multiplied: for verily Allah is withthose who believe!

Shakir: Surely the vilest of animals, in Allah's sight, are the deaf, the dumb, who do not understand.
Yusuf Ali: For the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb,- those who understand not.

Ayah: 23
Pickthal: Had Allah known of any good in them He would have made them hear, but had He made them hear they would have turned away, averse.
Shakir: And if Allah had known any good in them He would have made them hear, and if He makes them hear they would turnback while they withdraw.

Shakir: O Prophet! urge the believers to war; if there are twenty patient ones of you they shall overcome two hundred, and ifthere are a hundred of you they shall overcome a thousand ofthose who disbelieve, because they are a people who do notunderstand.

Pickthal: Had it not been for an ordinance of Allah which had gone before, an awful doom had come upon you on account of what ye took.
Shakir: Were it not for an ordinance from Allah that had already gone forth, surely there would have befallen you a great chastisement for what you had taken to.
