Ayah: 1
Arabic: الْحَاقَّةُ
Pickthal: The Reality!
Shakir: The sure calamity!
Yusuf Ali: The Sure Reality!

Ayah: 2
Arabic: مَا الْحَاقَّةُ
Pickthal: What is the Reality?
Shakir: What is the sure calamity!
Yusuf Ali: What is the Sure Reality?

Ayah: 3
Arabic: وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ
Pickthal: Ah, what will convey unto thee what the reality is!
Shakir: And what would make you realize what the sure calamity is!
Yusuf Ali: And what will make thee realise what the Sure Reality is?

Ayah: 4
Arabic: كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌ بِالْقَارِعَةِ
Pickthal: (The tribes of) Thamud and A'ad disbelieved in the judgment to come.
Shakir: Samood and Ad called the striking calamity a lie.
Yusuf Ali: The Thamud and the 'Ad People (branded) as false the Stunning Calamity!

Ayah: 5
Arabic: فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِالطَّاغِيَةِ
Pickthal: As for Thamud, they were destroyed by the lightning.
Shakir: Then as to Samood, they were destroyed by an excessively severe punishment.
Yusuf Ali: But the Thamud,- they were destroyed by a terrible Storm of thunder and lightning!

Ayah: 6
Arabic: وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ
Pickthal: And as for A'ad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring wind,
Shakir: And as to Ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent blast.
Yusuf Ali: And the 'Ad, they were destroyed by a furious Wind, exceedingly violent;

Ayah: 7
Arabic: سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى الْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَى كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ
Pickthal: Which He imposed on them for seven long nights and eight long days so that thou mightest have seen men lying overthrown, as they werehollow trunks of palm-trees.
Shakir: Which He made to prevail against them for seven nights and eight days unremittingly, so that you might have seen the people therein prostrate as if they were the trunks of hollow palms.
Yusuf Ali: He made it rage against them seven nights and eight days in succession: so that thou couldst see the (whole) people lying prostrate inits (path), as they had been roots of hollow palm-trees tumbled down!

Ayah: 8
Arabic: فَهَلْ تَرَى لَهُم مِّن بَاقِيَةٍ
Pickthal: Canst thou (O Muhammad) see any remnant of them?
Shakir: Do you then see of them one remaining?
Yusuf Ali: Then seest thou any of them left surviving?

Ayah: 9
Arabic: وَجَاء فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَن قَبْلَهُ وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَاتُ بِالْخَاطِئَةِ
Pickthal: And Pharaoh and those before him, and the communities that were destroyed, brought error,
Shakir: And Firon and those before him and the overthrown cities continuously committed sins.
Yusuf Ali: And Pharaoh, and those before him, and the Cities Overthrown, committed habitual Sin.

Ayah: 10
Arabic: فَعَصَوْا رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةً رَّابِيَةً
Pickthal: And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, therefor did He grip them with a tightening grip.
Shakir: And they disobeyed the Messenger of their Lord, so He punished them with a vehement punishment.
Yusuf Ali: And disobeyed (each) the messenger of their Lord; so He punished them with an abundant Penalty.

Ayah: 11
Arabic: إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاء حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ
Pickthal: Lo! when the waters rose, We carried you upon the ship
Shakir: Surely We bore you up in the ship when the water rose high,
Yusuf Ali: We, when the water (of Noah's Flood) overflowed beyond its limits, carried you (mankind), in the floating (Ark),

Ayah: 12
Arabic: لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَا أُذُنٌ وَاعِيَةٌ
Pickthal: That We might make it a memorial for you, and that remembering ears (that heard the story) might remember.
Shakir: So that We may make it a reminder to you, and that the retaining ear might retain it.
Yusuf Ali: That We might make it a Message unto you, and that ears (that should hear the tale and) retain its memory should bear its (lessons) inremembrance.

Ayah: 13
Arabic: فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ
Pickthal: And when the trumpet shall sound one blast
Shakir: And when the trumpet is blown with a single blast,
Yusuf Ali: Then, when one blast is sounded on the Trumpet,

Ayah: 14
Arabic: وَحُمِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَاحِدَةً
Pickthal: And the earth with the mountains shall be lifted up and crushed with one crash,
Shakir: And the earth and the mountains are borne away and crushed with a single crushing.
Yusuf Ali: And the earth is moved, and its mountains, and they are crushed to powder at one stroke,-

Ayah: 15
Arabic: فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ
Pickthal: Then, on that day will the Event befall.
Shakir: On that day shall the great event come to pass,
Yusuf Ali: On that Day shall the (Great) Event come to pass.

Ayah: 16
Arabic: وَانشَقَّتِ السَّمَاء فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ
Pickthal: And the heaven will split asunder, for that day it will be frail.
Shakir: And the heaven shall cleave asunder, so that on that day it shall be frail,
Yusuf Ali: And the sky will be rent asunder, for it will that Day be flimsy,

Ayah: 17
Arabic: وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَى أَرْجَائِهَا وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِيَةٌ
Pickthal: And the angels will be on the sides thereof, and eight will uphold the Throne of thy Lord that day, above them.
Shakir: And the angels shall be on the sides thereof; and above ) I them eight shall bear on that day your Lord's power.
Yusuf Ali: And the angels will be on its sides, and eight will, that Day, bear the Throne of thy Lord above them.

Ayah: 18
Arabic: يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَى مِنكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ
Pickthal: On that day ye will be exposed; not a secret of you will be hidden.
Shakir: On that day you shall be exposed to view-- no secret of yours shall remain hidden.
Yusuf Ali: That Day shall ye be brought to Judgment: not an act of yours that ye hide will be hidden.

Ayah: 19
Arabic: فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَيَقُولُ هَاؤُمُ اقْرَؤُوا كِتَابِيهْ
Pickthal: Then, as for him who is given his record in his right hand, he will say: Take, read my book!
Shakir: Then as for him who is given his book in his right hand, he will say: Lo! read my book:
Yusuf Ali: Then he that will be given his Record in his right hand will say: "Ah here! Read ye my Record!

Ayah: 20
Arabic: إِنِّي ظَنَنتُ أَنِّي مُلَاقٍ حِسَابِيهْ
Pickthal: Surely I knew that I should have to meet my reckoning.
Shakir: Surely I knew that I shall meet my account.
Yusuf Ali: "I did really understand that my Account would (One Day) reach me!"

Ayah: 21
Arabic: فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَّاضِيَةٍ
Pickthal: Then he will be in blissful state
Shakir: So he shall be in a life of pleasure,
Yusuf Ali: And he will be in a life of Bliss,

Ayah: 22
Arabic: فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
Pickthal: In a high garden
Shakir: In a lofty garden,
Yusuf Ali: In a Garden on high,

Ayah: 23
Arabic: قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ
Pickthal: Whereof the clusters are in easy reach.
Shakir: The fruits of which are near at hand:
Yusuf Ali: The Fruits whereof (will hang in bunches) low and near.

Ayah: 24
Arabic: كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الْأَيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ
Pickthal: (And it will be said unto those therein): Eat and drink at ease for that which ye sent on before you in past days.
Shakir: Eat and drink pleasantly for what you did beforehand in the days gone by.
Yusuf Ali: "Eat ye and drink ye, with full satisfaction; because of the (good) that ye sent before you, in the days that are gone!"

Ayah: 25
Arabic: وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ فَيَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَابِيهْ
Pickthal: But as for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: Oh, would that I had not been given my book
Shakir: And as for him who is given his book in his left hand he shall say: O would that my book had never been given me:
Yusuf Ali: And he that will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "Ah! Would that my Record had not been given to me!

Ayah: 26
Arabic: وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيهْ
Pickthal: And knew not what my reckoning!
Shakir: And I had not known what my account was:
Yusuf Ali: "And that I had never realised how my account (stood)!

Ayah: 27
Arabic: يَا لَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ الْقَاضِيَةَ
Pickthal: Oh, would that it had been death!
Shakir: O would that it had made an end (of me):
Yusuf Ali: "Ah! Would that (Death) had made an end of me!

Ayah: 28
Arabic: مَا أَغْنَى عَنِّي مَالِيهْ
Pickthal: My wealth hath not availed me,
Shakir: My wealth has availed me nothing:
Yusuf Ali: "Of no profit to me has been my wealth!

Ayah: 29
Arabic: هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلْطَانِيهْ
Pickthal: My power hath gone from me.
Shakir: My authority is gone away from me.
Yusuf Ali: "My power has perished from me!"...

Ayah: 30
Arabic: خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ
Pickthal: (It will be said): Take him and fetter him
Shakir: Lay hold on him, then put a chain on him,
Yusuf Ali: (The stern command will say): "Seize ye him, and bind ye him,

Ayah: 31
Arabic: ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ
Pickthal: And then expose him to hell-fire
Shakir: Then cast him into the burning fire,
Yusuf Ali: "And burn ye him in the Blazing Fire.

Ayah: 32
Arabic: ثُمَّ فِي سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسْلُكُوهُ
Pickthal: And then insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits.
Shakir: Then thrust him into a chain the length of which is seventy cubits.
Yusuf Ali: "Further, make him march in a chain, whereof the length is seventy cubits!

Ayah: 33
Arabic: إِنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ
Pickthal: Lo! He used not to believe in Allah the Tremendous,
Shakir: Surely he did not believe in Allah, the Great,
Yusuf Ali: "This was he that would not believe in Allah Most High.

Ayah: 34
Arabic: وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ
Pickthal: And urged not on the feeding of the wretched.
Shakir: Nor did he urge the feeding of the poor.
Yusuf Ali: "And would not encourage the feeding of the indigent!

Ayah: 35
Arabic: فَلَيْسَ لَهُ الْيَوْمَ هَاهُنَا حَمِيمٌ
Pickthal: Therefor hath he no lover here this day,
Shakir: Therefore he has not here today a true friend,
Yusuf Ali: "So no friend hath he here this Day.

Ayah: 36
Arabic: وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ
Pickthal: Nor any food save filth
Shakir: Nor any food except refuse,
Yusuf Ali: "Nor hath he any food except the corruption from the washing of wounds,

Ayah: 37
Arabic: لَا يَأْكُلُهُ إِلَّا الْخَاطِؤُونَ
Pickthal: Which none but sinners eat.
Shakir: Which none but the wrongdoers eat.
Yusuf Ali: "Which none do eat but those in sin."

Ayah: 38
Arabic: فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ
Pickthal: But nay! I swear by all that ye see
Shakir: But nay! I swear by that which you see,
Yusuf Ali: So I do call to witness what ye see,

Ayah: 39
Arabic: وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ
Pickthal: And all that ye see not
Shakir: And that which you do not see.
Yusuf Ali: And what ye see not,

Ayah: 40
Arabic: إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ
Pickthal: That it is indeed the speech of an illustrious messenger.
Shakir: Most surely, it is the Word brought by an honored Messenger,
Yusuf Ali: That this is verily the word of an honoured messenger;

Ayah: 41
Arabic: وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تُؤْمِنُونَ
Pickthal: It is not poet's speech - little is it that ye believe!
Shakir: And it is not the word of a poet; little is it that you believe;
Yusuf Ali: It is not the word of a poet: little it is ye believe!

Ayah: 42
Arabic: وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ قَلِيلًا مَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
Pickthal: Nor diviner's speech - little is it that ye remember!
Shakir: Nor the word of a soothsayer; little is it that you mind.
Yusuf Ali: Nor is it the word of a soothsayer: little admonition it is ye receive.

Ayah: 43
Arabic: تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
Pickthal: It is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
Shakir: It is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
Yusuf Ali: (This is) a Message sent down from the Lord of the Worlds.

Ayah: 44
Arabic: وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ
Pickthal: And if he had invented false sayings concerning Us,
Shakir: And if he had fabricated against Us some of the sayings,
Yusuf Ali: And if the messenger were to invent any sayings in Our name,

Ayah: 45
Arabic: لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ
Pickthal: We assuredly had taken him by the right hand
Shakir: We would certainly have seized him by the right hand,
Yusuf Ali: We should certainly seize him by his right hand,

Ayah: 46
Arabic: ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ
Pickthal: And then severed his life-artery,
Shakir: Then We would certainly have cut off his aorta.
Yusuf Ali: And We should certainly then cut off the artery of his heart:

Ayah: 47
Arabic: فَمَا مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَاجِزِينَ
Pickthal: And not one of you could have held Us off from him.
Shakir: And not one of you could have withheld Us from him.
Yusuf Ali: Nor could any of you withhold him (from Our wrath).

Ayah: 48
Arabic: وَإِنَّهُ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
Pickthal: And lo! it is a warrant unto those who ward off (evil).
Shakir: And most surely it is a reminder for those who guard (against evil).
Yusuf Ali: But verily this is a Message for the Allah-fearing.

Ayah: 49
Arabic: وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنكُم مُّكَذِّبِينَ
Pickthal: And lo! We know that some among you will deny (it).
Shakir: And most surely We know that some of you are rejecters.
Yusuf Ali: And We certainly know that there are amongst you those that reject (it).

Ayah: 50
Arabic: وَإِنَّهُ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ
Pickthal: And lo! it is indeed an anguish for the disbelievers.
Shakir: And most surely it is a great grief to the unbelievers.
Yusuf Ali: But truly (Revelation) is a cause of sorrow for the Unbelievers.

Ayah: 51
Arabic: وَإِنَّهُ لَحَقُّ الْيَقِينِ
Pickthal: And lo! it is absolute truth.
Shakir: And most surely it is the true certainty
Yusuf Ali: But verily it is Truth of assured certainty.

Ayah: 52
Arabic: فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
Pickthal: So glorify the name of thy Tremendous Lord.
Shakir: Therefore-glorify the name of your Lord, the Great.
Yusuf Ali: So glorify the name of thy Lord Most High.
