Shakir: He it is Who has revealed the Book to you; some of its verses are decisive, they are the basis of the Book, and others are allegorical; then as for those in whose hearts there is perversity they follow the part of it which is allegorical, seeking to mislead and seeking to give it (their own) interpretation. but none knowsits interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rootedin knowledge say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; andnone do mind except those having understanding.
Yusuf Ali: He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation ofthe Book: others are allegorical. Pickthal: Among the People of the Scripture there is he who, if thou trust him with a weight of treasure, will return it to thee. And among themthere is he who, if thou trust him with a piece of gold, will not return itto thee unless thou keep standing over him. That is because they say: Wehave no duty to the Gentiles. They speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly.
Shakir: And among the followers of the Book there are some such that if you entrust one (of them) with a heap of wealth, he shall pay it back to you; and among them there are some such that if you entrust one (of them) with a dinar he shall not pay it back to you except so long as you remain firm in demanding it; this is because they say: There is not upon us in the matter of the unlearned people any way (to reproach); and they tell a lie against Allah while they know.
Yusuf Ali: Among the People of the Book are some who, if entrusted with a hoard of gold, will (readily) pay it back; others, who, if entrusted with asingle silver coin, will not repay it unless thou constantly stoodestdemanding, because, they say, "there is no call on us (to keep faith) withthese ignorant (Pagans)." but they tell a lie against Allah, and (well) theyknow it.

Pickthal: And lo! there is a party of them who distort the Scripture with their tongues, that ye may think that what they say is from theScripture, when it is not from the Scripture. And they say: It is fromAllah, when it is not from Allah; and they speak a lie concerning Allahknowingly.
Shakir: Most surely there is a party amongst those who distort the Book with their tongue that you may consider it to be (a part) ofthe Book, and they say, It is from Allah, while it is not fromAllah, and they tell a lie against Allah whilst they know.

Pickthal: It is not (possible) for any human being unto whom Allah had given the Scripture and wisdom and the prophethood that he shouldafterwards have said unto mankind: Be slaves of me instead of Allah; but(what he said was): Be ye faithful servants of the Lord by virtue of yourconstant teaching of the Scripture and of your constant study thereof.
Shakir: It is not meet for a mortal that Allah should give him the Book and the wisdom and prophethood, then he should say tomen: Be my servants rather than Allah's; but rather (he wouldsay): Be worshippers of the Lord because of your teaching theBook and your reading (it yourselves).
Yusuf Ali: It is not (possible) that a man, to whom is given the Book, and Wisdom, and the prophetic office, should say to people: "Be ye myworshippers rather than Allah's": on the contrary (He would say) "Be yeworshippers of Him Who is truly the Cherisher of all: For ye have taughtthe Book and ye have studied it earnestly."
