In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

26 - Listen to Recitation of this Surah with Translation

Ayah: 1
Arabic: هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ
Pickthal: Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming?
Shakir: Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity?
Yusuf Ali: Has the story reached thee of the overwhelming (Event)?

Ayah: 2
Arabic: وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ
Pickthal: On that day (many) faces will be downcast,
Shakir: (Some) faces on that day shall be downcast,
Yusuf Ali: Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated,

Ayah: 3
Arabic: عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ
Pickthal: Toiling, weary,
Shakir: Laboring, toiling,
Yusuf Ali: Labouring (hard), weary,-

Ayah: 4
Arabic: تَصْلَى نَارًا حَامِيَةً
Pickthal: Scorched by burning fire,
Shakir: Entering into burning fire,
Yusuf Ali: The while they enter the Blazing Fire,-

Ayah: 5
Arabic: تُسْقَى مِنْ عَيْنٍ آنِيَةٍ
Pickthal: Drinking from a boiling spring,
Shakir: Made to drink from a boiling spring.
Yusuf Ali: The while they are given, to drink, of a boiling hot spring,

Ayah: 6
Arabic: لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ
Pickthal: No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
Shakir: They shall have no food but of thorns,
Yusuf Ali: No food will there be for them but a bitter Dhari'

Ayah: 7
Arabic: لَا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِن جُوعٍ
Pickthal: Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
Shakir: Which will neither fatten nor avail against hunger.
Yusuf Ali: Which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.

Ayah: 8
Arabic: وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ
Pickthal: In that day other faces will be calm,
Shakir: (Other) faces on that day shall be happy,
Yusuf Ali: (Other) faces that Day will be joyful,

Ayah: 9
Arabic: لِسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ
Pickthal: Glad for their effort past,
Shakir: Well-pleased because of their striving,
Yusuf Ali: Pleased with their striving,-

Ayah: 10
Arabic: فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ
Pickthal: In a high Garden
Shakir: In a lofty garden,
Yusuf Ali: In a Garden on high,

Ayah: 11
Arabic: لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً
Pickthal: Where they hear no idle speech,
Shakir: Wherein you shall not hear vain talk.
Yusuf Ali: Where they shall hear no (word) of vanity:

Ayah: 12
Arabic: فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ
Pickthal: Wherein is a gushing spring,
Shakir: Therein is a fountain flowing,
Yusuf Ali: Therein will be a bubbling spring:

Ayah: 13
Arabic: فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ
Pickthal: Wherein are couches raised
Shakir: Therein are thrones raised high,
Yusuf Ali: Therein will be Thrones (of dignity), raised on high,

Ayah: 14
Arabic: وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ
Pickthal: And goblets set at hand
Shakir: And drinking-cups ready placed,
Yusuf Ali: Goblets placed (ready),

Ayah: 15
Arabic: وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ
Pickthal: And cushions ranged
Shakir: And cushions set in a row,
Yusuf Ali: And cushions set in rows,

Ayah: 16
Arabic: وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ
Pickthal: And silken carpets spread.
Shakir: And carpets spread out.
Yusuf Ali: And rich carpets (all) spread out.

Ayah: 17
Arabic: أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ
Pickthal: Will they not regard the camels, how they are created?
Shakir: Will they not then consider the camels, how they are created?
Yusuf Ali: Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made?-

Ayah: 18
Arabic: وَإِلَى السَّمَاء كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ
Pickthal: And the heaven, how it is raised?
Shakir: And the heaven, how it is reared aloft,
Yusuf Ali: And at the Sky, how it is raised high?-

Ayah: 19
Arabic: وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ
Pickthal: And the hills, how they are set up?
Shakir: And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed,
Yusuf Ali: And at the Mountains, how they are fixed firm?-

Ayah: 20
Arabic: وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ
Pickthal: And the earth, how it is spread?
Shakir: And the earth, how it is made a vast expanse?
Yusuf Ali: And at the Earth, how it is spread out?

Ayah: 21
Arabic: فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ
Pickthal: Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer,
Shakir: Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder.
Yusuf Ali: Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish.

Ayah: 22
Arabic: لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ
Pickthal: Thou art not at all a warder over them.
Shakir: You are not a watcher over them;
Yusuf Ali: Thou art not one to manage (men's) affairs.

Ayah: 23
Arabic: إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّى وَكَفَرَ
Pickthal: But whoso is averse and disbelieveth,
Shakir: But whoever turns back and disbelieves,
Yusuf Ali: But if any turn away and reject Allah,-

Ayah: 24
Arabic: فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ
Pickthal: Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
Shakir: Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement.
Yusuf Ali: Allah will punish him with a mighty Punishment,

Ayah: 25
Arabic: إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ
Pickthal: Lo! unto Us is their return
Shakir: Surely to Us is their turning back,
Yusuf Ali: For to Us will be their return;

Ayah: 26
Arabic: ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ
Pickthal: And Ours their reckoning.
Shakir: Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account.
Yusuf Ali: Then it will be for Us to call them to account.
